SharePoint agent upgrade guidance sets out the move beyond .agent files

Microsoft Mission Critical Blog · Microsoft Learn · 30 Oct 2026

**SharePoint and OneDrive agents are moving from .agent files to the Microsoft 365 agent platform.

** Microsoft’s October 30 preparation guide, supported by its upgrade documentation, says new agent creation will move to Copilot Agent Builder from mid-November 2026.

Existing .agent experiences remain supported through March 2027 and stop responding afterward; upgrades are not automatic.

Owners can choose Agent Builder, a site skill, Copilot in SharePoint or an appropriate Copilot Studio publishing path. Sharing, source permissions, licensing and page or Teams placements need separate checks.

Copilot in SharePoint requires a Copilot license; advanced work also uses Copilot Credits.
